LIAISON INTERPRETING
The interpreter translates one sentence at a time (or in short blocks). This method is used when immediate information transfer is required, as in the case of business meetings, company presentations, work meetings or luncheons, commercial negotiations, technical training for machine installation, use, and maintenance, institutional meetings in courts, prefectures, police headquarters, and academic institutions.
SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETING
The interpreter works inside a soundproof booth and provides an instantaneous translation while a speaker is talking. The audience listen to the translation through headphones. This method is typically used at international events with large audiences.
CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING
The interpreter listens to a speaker and takes notes (for a maximum of about 10 minutes), providing a detailed translation immediately afterwards, in alternation with the speaker. This technique is ideal for press conferences, round tables, specialized congresses, and private meetings.
CHUCHOTAGE INTERPRETING
The interpreter is positioned close behind one or two foreign guests and “whispers” a simultaneous translation (as the French word chuchoter suggests) into the ears of the guests, without any technical aids. It is generally used for events with a limited number of foreign guests (a maximum of 2 per interpreter).
"Interpreters are marginal yet central figures."
